House
of Blues
Despite being a
link in a national chain, this club embodies the carefree and
committed musical spirit of New Orleans.

The
Scene
Folk art is perfectly placed, theater-style ropes keep
admission lines orderly, and efficient employees prowl the
grounds with headsets or walkie-talkies. HOB proudly hawks its
courtyard and takes a local role by hosting special events
such as benefit concerts.
The Draw
The top-level talent and customer service make it hard to
resent this chain, which has eclipsed more homegrown venues.
The company's deep pockets lure an eclectic range of big-name
touring acts, from Ziggy Marley to Frank Black. The club also
hosts several shows by burgeoning local bands each month. The
dining room is huge and busy, seating nearly 300. Service is
quick and friendly. HOB has po'boys, jambalaya and etouffee,
but carnivores should try the slow-smoked baby back ribs with
tangy Jack Daniels barbecue sauce. |

The
Scene
Zeitgeist is more than a movie theater. It's an enormous
nonprofit performance space and art gallery. Come for the
latest installation and stay for the puppets, avant-garde
jazz, spoken word or, best of all, the original film
programming.
The Screen
This is what everyone's favorite screenwriter, William
Shakespeare, would have termed "the rub."
Architecturally, the Zeitgeist screen is an innovation: It's
concealed up in the ceiling until show time, when it is
lowered to bisect the many-windowed room. Trouble comes during
the summer when the sun lasts well through the 7:30 showing.
That said, the space's vast height keeps the place cool.
The Space
In May 2000, the New Orleans Historic Landmarks Commission
rewarded 1712-24 O.C. Haley Boulevard (once known as Venus
Gardens), which includes Zeitgeist, with a Certificate of
Merit for Renovation of a Landmark. |
